Why do we buy “Stuff” we don’t need

Went to bed with my new Toy. This does it all..Love it

Went to bed about 11 pm, shattered I was, could not keep my eyes open. I put a few films on my Samsung pad to watch, or I had the choice of music,  I can even network it with my home network and hook right into my main PC, or to read my book, Time Raiders by Alex Scarrow, I am on the 3rd book, 3 to go, then a 7th book coming out in December I think. Time Travel, anyone who knows me will tell you Time Travel is my thing. Since I was a very young lad, it just grabbed me, to this day, I love it, the first book I ever read was part one below

Part 1, I am on part 3

Part 1, I am on part 3

Then it dawned on me, why am I ever bored? I have all the latest technology, I want for nothing. I save heavily, but when I am bored there is always something to do, or is there. Do I buy this stuff because I want to or because TV land planted a seed in my head and I just “Had to get it”

Strange concept TV adverts or magazines, newspapers etc, they tell us how to look and dress, what to buy, what to eat, how to eat, what to buy, tell us we need a 62 inch plasma TV, yeah I have one, I fell for that also. I also have Sky-HD and the best DVD player there is, although that was cheap.

So what is it with “Wanting stuff” I ask? I am not the only one, far from it, I even have a car that Danced on TV for me, and yeah I bought that also. We just “NEED” stuff. Then the argument is “You can’t take your money with you”  So the car, why did I spend thousands of pounds on it? I don’t even like it! But being disabled, I do need it

Dancing got me! :-(

Dancing got me! :-(

In real life below

Mine is in Green, a nice green, tartan type Green.

Mine is in Green, a nice green, tartan type Green.

So why do we do it? Why do we? I know I am not alone, sales of I pads are through the roof and also big TV’s and technology for PC’s and Laptops, we all MUST HAVE IT. I have 2 PC’s at my work station a Laptop in the Kitchen for peace and when I need to work or do something that requires I need the kids out the way. I surrounded myself with thousands of pounds of “Stuff” I don’t know why.

My Tv

My Tv

My good PC

My good PC

So debate time, why do we do it? Why do we fall for TV land and its promise that “This Product will change your life and make you happy” I think about this a lot. People get themselves in to heavy debt to get this, I save heavily, so when I think I can afford a wee “Pick me treat” I treat myself. And to be fair, my partner just shakes her head at me. I can hear her think “Fool” But I am in pain right? Yeah that excuse did not work with Miss Shaun either :-( No excuse, I got sucked into TV land and spent a fortune on things I don’t need. I already had a PC. I did need my Car though! But all this extravagance is it a bad sign or a good sign?

I also have a Wii Gathering dust, an IPod Touch gathering dust and a PSP gathering dust (Play station Portable), I have fell for the very thing I hate. Greed and “Want” It does not make me a bad person. I have money, I spend it, and Miss Shaun looks at me Funny. But it doesn’t stop there, oh no! If Miss Shaun is foolish enough to let me go to the BIG SHOP on my own, I bring back things that was not on the list and I come home with bags of toys for my Daughters or a game for the PS3 or Xbox for my son’s they wanted. Maybe I am just kind? Lol

Well I could not sleep, so I blogged this rubbish, to go along with the rubbish I buy.

My area of the main room, with the Laptop I bought my Partner in the background

Shaun :-) Idiot

ps: I even got an HTC Windows phone :-) lol

Mine is the one showing

May I add I am not rich in any way you would say “He is rich” I just save heavily. And if money is spare, I would rather buy something, that drink the money away, or waste it.

  1. So, I totally get what you mean. I do the same thing. We are far from rich, very middle class, but we have a lot of things that we shouldn’t have spent such a large amount of money on. But we have anyway. The objects make us happy or child happy.I love technology. I love to have the latest and most of the time with me I don’t get the latest until a new latest is out, so maybe I do okay. Tommy tries to make sure we forgo the places I like to shop..
*Forgo: Meaning avoiding with a vengeance( my new word of the day)*

    • Fantabulous!! (New Wordage) (s) he-he

Yeah we ain’t rich, we manage. We save HARD. Every penny is a prisoner. Seriously, we are careful with our budget. And if want to buy something, we can. If my car breaks I can fix it, when the Washing Machine broke (And we need that) We could get one.

But Miss Shaun is brilliant with me. Me in a Technology shop is like a kid in a Toy shop. I just have to buy something lol
Sometimes she will say “We ain’t going in there”
Sometimes when I am REALLY low she just lets me get on with it. As she knows I need a wee lift.
But still, why do we do it? lol

Do you think TV has us in a trance?
Google Derren Brown. He is into the subconsious mind and how it can be tricked into buying fresh air!! I often wonder if this is how adverts for “Stuff” works..

      I wonder…

      • yeah we are just now getting pretty good with saving. Still hard, but since we are trying to save up to get a house by this summer its a little easier to save, living in an apartment isn’t homey enough for me. I want something that is mine, so I know I have to no spend and buy frivolous things. The thing with me though and I don’t really watch a t.v. I have no excuse. ha-ha That a very good wife you got there. I like how you call her Miss Shaun. I’m the same way with electronic stores, a little kid at Christmas looking at all the best toys. :)

      • LOL…
The older you get, the more you will save, trust me.You do, especially with a kid or Kids start to think ahead. It comes with age and growing up. I only wish we had started saving 10 years early. We used to go out to parties every weekend and spend £100 a night EASY. Now we never go out, unless its a meal with friends, or a wedding or something. Even then, neither of us really drink. And with me being a DJ/Singer I usually get my drink for free (Not Daft) lol

        X

      • I wish it was so easy to save. we are getting better but it is taking time. I don’t drink so we don[t party, plus having a 4 year old and no babysitter ever. I don’t think we ever get a night out.. well the last time his parent visited they made us go out. we were gone for maybe an hour. lol Oh I almost have one chapter done… Woowhoo!!

      • With kids or a kid you NEED A weekend to yourself sometime, honest, you do. takes its toll with you knowing. Speaking through having done it.

And a chapter done..GO ON YOU!!
        Well done..Keep me updated please..

        x

      • yeah, we don’t usually have a day better yet a whole weekend, gosh it was last summer the last time we had a real break. oh i will, its just a draft, was thinking of posting it to get feedback, because its hard to tell how it really sounds…

  2. I think we do it because we can feel something is missing withing us, but we dont know what that “something” is. That vulnerability, is taken advantage by companies, and that confusion is a marketers dream. We fill that mysterious place with ipads, cars, or debt, and when the high from those items go away..we are forced to buy again. Something within us…empty….i dont mean to preach..i speak from my past..meaning..this is what i did..now im broke so i have to be philosophical..lol thank goodness i still have a sense of humor.

    • LOL!!
Yeah this was what I was getting at.I think this is why we do it. Thank God we have no debt, we paid off debt for 10 years or so then decided “Never again” and saved. So we save like you wouldn’t believe, we can go days without buying a thing. Maybe Milk and bread each day.
But I think you are right. That is what my blog was going for. We are being conned into buying “$h1t” we don’t need

      Thanks for the reply..
      Shaun x

  3. In my other life, I used to do some of this. Then, I lost all my stuff in the tsunami divorce. It was freeing. I now have “stuff” through merging households with my fiance, but I rarely have the urge to purchase anything anymore. I recently had to replace some work clothes, and found it painful rather than fun. I have found that I seek stuff when I am not happy. So I work to be happy and avoid the stuff. My money now goes towards experiences rather than things because I have found that even though they may only last a few moments, the joy they bring is persistant.

    • Yeah I buy that. And the reason I did this blog was in the hope others would chip in with debate on why they buy stuff, or if they buy stuff.
I understand your point of view 100% and fully get it and respect it

      Thanks for the comment

      • I think it’s a form of socially acceptable and corporately encouraged disassociation and distraction. That being said, I still find myself lusting after the items in the new Athleta catalog! My brain keeps trying to tell me I’ll be happier if I buy those stupid $60 shorts. I keep telling it to buzz off and that my old shorts are just fine, thank you very much:)

      • Do you remember when Mosses went up the mountain to collect the 10 commandments ? Well he took a long time and when he got back the people had built a statute of Gold and called it Mammon ! Mosses had a hissy fit and smashed it up!! Also it was referred when Jesus as a young boy / man threw the money traders out of the Temple. So in essence Mammon is the God of money and wealth!… heehehehe sorry not trying to fox you !! xxx

      • Pills….I see. Don’t take them unless its life or death. Dr’s don’t give a shit. I am over 20 a day down on what I was a year ago. This time next year, no pills. They do more damage long term in some cases. But if its a must. Then “Good Luck”

      • Toys for the boys. I too like my tech so I save for it and like you I buy even if I don’t need it.
Adverts are full of subliminal messages which coax you into believing you can’t live without the item you are looking at. And as far as toys for the kids go, I think the adults have more fun with them because it takes you back to a childlike state of mind. Especially for the Dads out there. I always had more fun with a cardboard box when I was a kid. Especially if I could climb inside it.

      • Funny Story…
Last Xmas we got my youngest daughter a Disney car. Big box. Where did she sit for 3 days till we had to throw it out.

Yup, in one. The box. The car was just a thing that came with the box to her. lol

And yeah, boys toys. Technology and cars. That is our thing. Without it we would knit and make scones.

        Well said.
        lol :-)

      • And you so sensitive. Lots of guys knit. Best cooks are men ( or is that a bit sexist).

You won’t lose your man card mate. :)

      • I am trying hard to cut out some of my pills. Not going too badly but I have a virus right now hacking cough achs pains and a cold ;-) hope you are in better shape. Oh! Yes the laptop is not working either so fighting with the phone. :-(

      • Sometimes here the Dr’s just throw tablets at you. Now I am left alone to wean myself of them. As they are starting to not work. Some days, like today, they are a must.
Sorry about the laptop. I am a pc tech, anyway I can help, let me know. Shaun.

      • Yes good days bad days that damn saying keeps rearing it’s ugly head. I feel like shit today too but I am on a regime to come down off of the high dosages that I am on. As for the laptop it was a Christmas present and we have spoken to the place we bought it and it is going back next week! Money back ….. very annoying though it could be worse!
Hope you have had a good day.

      • Friday is BUSY day for me. To others it is just normal. I time it so when we get back, I am due my medication. And yeah it’s only a laptop, money back or fixed, could be worse.
I have full spine pain today, I fell out of bed last night :-) I SOOO wish someone was there to record it. If you can’t laugh at yourself, you know.

        Hope you feel better soon

        Shaun

      • 100%
Some days you just get down and nothing can lift you. Some days, you just ignore the pain. I described the pain like all over toothache, kinda what my back is like today. Tomorrow it will be my Knee or something else.
We got two choices, give in, or go to bed till we stop for good and cry.
Live for every day. As if it is our last. I was taught this by my Father. He is the wisest man I know

  4. This is actually something I’ve given a lot of thought to over the years. I used to buy all kinds of things and then try to justify those purchases..and the thing was, back then, I didn’t really have the money to waste on things I didn’t absolutely need. But, as I got older, I got much better at saving money, delaying gratification, and questioning whether or not I would really use what I was considering buying. I think it finally hit me when I started donating recent purchases…wow, what a waste of money, time, and energy to buy something, maybe use it a couple of times then let it sit there gathering dust until I decided to declutter. Now I ask myself if I really need what I’m wanting, then I ask myself if I’ll really use it…most of the time the answer is “no”.

For me, I think I fell into the trap of buying things without thinking it through because I had grown up in povery…not the no food in the house kind of poverty, but certainly the squeeze every penny, use things until they wear out, never have enough money to even eat at McDonalds kind of poverty. Funny thing is, I’ve gone back to living those same values even though I no longer have to financially…having money in the bank is more rewarding than having more junk in my house…it took me a lot of years to figure that out, but I finally learned a valuable lesson.

    • Crazy isnt it, how we get older, then think twice. I am not rich, comfy yes, like you are now. And a lot of times I dont buy, like the things I have gathering dust. As I said a few replies back, and you hit on, you learn to save, so you can buy things, but now, I only buy if needed. Miss Shaun holds the cards. Its for the best. :-)
